3M ESPE claims its new Filtek Silorane Low Shrink Posterior Restorative System is the first composite system to achieve less than 1% polymerization shrinkage, while still offering clinicians excellent handling, strong mechanical properties and naturallooking restorations.
Volumetric shrinkage has historically presented a problem in the dental community. Since 1950, the accepted strategy to reduce shrinkage has been to increase filler load; however, the issue of volumetric shrinkage and its affect on marginal integrity has largely gone unsolved.
According to 3M ESPE, they have been revolutionary in their approach to controlling shrinkage with the development of silorane chemistry. Silorane chemistry utilizes ring-opening polymerization resulting in the lowest shrinking composite available on the market today.
According to the company, this system presents a scientific breakthrough that significantly reduces the threat of shrinkage (i.e. marginal gap formation, leakage and the risk of secondary caries). Recent studies comparing Filtek™ Silorane to leading methacrylate-based composites show a significant reduction in polymerization stress.1 High polymerization stress is a clinically relevant contributor for clinical symptoms like cusp deflection, enamel fracture and postoperative sensitivity.
The advanced Silorane technology increases ambient light stability up to a convenient nine minutes of handling time under operatory light. Additionally, it is easy to place, even in horizontal layers.
The revolutionary new ring-opening polymerization regiment requires the use of a dedicated system adhesive - 3M ESPE Silorane System Adhesive Self- Etch Primer and Bond.
Combined with Silorane primer and bond, Filtek Silorane Low Shrink Posterior Restorative provides a simple posterior restorative system for dentists who value low shrink technology. The complete restorative system features four radiopaque shades, and is delivered in capsules and syringes.
