Well-known sports dentist Dr Brett Dorney is the first non-US citizen to be elected as president of the Academy of Sports Dentistry for 2005/2006.
Founded in San Antonio, Texas back in 1983, the Academy's aim was initially to educate the dental profession and the public on ways to reduce the incidence of traumatic dental injuries in sport. This role has since expanded to include the prevention of those injuries and how dentists can involve themselves and their practice with sporting teams.
Dr Dorney, who is in private practice in the Sydney suburb of Pymble, joined the Academy in 1993 and has regularly presented at their annual meetings as well as introducing pressure lamination for mouthguard construction to the USA.
He is also very active in Australia, and among other activities, runs annual courses for Henry Schein Regional on mouthguards; lectures at Sydney University to undergraduates; and to sports physicians at the University of NSW. Dr Dorney has demonstrated how positive it is for your practice to have a large Sports Dentistry component culminating with his participation in the Sydney Olympics and Paralympic Games, the 2003 Rugby World Cup and his current involvement with Sydney University and Eastwood rugby union teams as well as the NSW Waratahs.
You can support Dr Dorney and learn about sports dentistry at the ASD 2006 Annual Symposium, June 22-24, 2006 in Santa Monica, California under the theme of "Treat with confidence, prevent with success". This meeting will include "The Team Dentist course", which is one of the most popular and successful innovations of the Academy for Sports Dentistry.
