Cover story: Case report with Ceram.x Spectra ST Effects

By Dr Jason Smithson

For aesthetically demanding anterior cases, Ceram.x Spectra ST Effects Composite (Dentsply Sirona) works with Ceram.x Spectra ST Composite (Dentsply Sirona) in a simplified layering technique. Ceram.x Spectra ST Effects opaque dentin shades are paired with Ceram.x Spectra ST universal CLOUD shades when a case calls for added opacity. One translucent enamel shade creates a highly translucent incisal edge when needed. This simplified layering is made possible by SphereTEC filler technology.

Case report

A 72-year old partially dentate female patient attended for reconstruction of her upper arch. The upper right molar tooth was deemed unrestorable and was extracted as part of the overall plan. The remaining right lateral incisor and central incisors (12, 11 and 21) had existing failing direct resin restorations and showed moderate wear. Due to budget constraints these teeth were restored with direct resin (Dentsply Sirona Ceram.x Spectra ST Effects) followed by a chrome-cobalt removable partial denture.

Conclusion

This article demonstrates that a very simple layering technique whereby only 2 layers of two opacities (with an optional incisal "enamel" effect) can be utilised to create high-end aesthetics in a time-efficient manner which is relatively technique insensitive.
