Under proposed changes to the Radiation Control Regulation in NSW, to be implemented on 1 September, the NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will have the option of issuing on the spot fines ranging from $100 to $1000 for minor breaches, as well as the existing path of full prosecution for more serious offences.
A spokesperson for the EPA said the new system of on-the-spot fines were designed to immediately address minor breaches, freeing up the courts, similar to a parking fine. Repeat offenders who are issued with a number of infringements could also be easily identified for more severe action. While minor penalties are being increased, the maximum penalty possible under the Radiation Control Act will remain at $11,000.
