The clinical success of an adhesive often depends on the technique of the clinician. Total-etch adhesives generally require a "wet bonding" technique. Here the adhesive should be applied onto etched dentin that is slightly moist to avoid desiccation. How wet or dry the dentin should be in order to achieve sufficient bond strength is often very challenging.
Adhese Universal from Ivoclar Vivadent works effectively on both wet and dry dentin. It combines hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties into one balanced formulation. It is extremely tolerant towards moisture with effective penetration into the dentin tubules. The application time ensures that the hydrophilic monomers and water sufficiently re-wet the dentin to allow the adhesive to infiltrate into the collagen network. An homogeneous, even layer forms even if the adhesive is dispersed with a strong stream of air. Once polymerised, this layer provides optimum sealing of the dentin tubules.
High bond strength values
The bond strength of Adhese Universal to dentin remains uncompromised, even after etching with phosphoric acid, or over-drying or over-wetting the dentin surface. This results in a reliable high bond strength on wet and dry dentin - independent of the etching and application protocol employed. The high technique tolerance of Adhese Universal has been confirmed in a recent study (Singhai et al., University at Buffalo, USA 2014). This study examined the bond strength on wet, dry and desiccated dentin for six adhesives from different manufactures. Results: Adhese Universal achieved consistently high bond strength values, irrespective of the condition of the dentin!
