Dental practitioners from around Australia attended a series of Swiss Dental Academy workshops hosted by A-dec Australia and EMS (Electro Medical Systems) in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne Sydney and Brisbane recently.
The workshops involved theoretical and hands-on technical training in correct technique using scaling and air prophylaxis equipment for removing calculus, biofilm, bacteria and stains on teeth.
The sessions were hosted by Ms Antje Ley, Head of Dental Training & Application from the EMS Swiss Dental Academy in Switzerland and Sydney-based EMS product specialist, Nathan Giess.
The workshops provided a sneak preview of the latest Air Flow Master from EMS - the first air prophylaxis unit capable of sub-gingival periodontal treatment - allowing effective bacterial removal below gum level.
A-dec Ancillary Products Specialist, Nathan Giess, said the ability of the Air Flow Master to penetrate up to 10 mm below the gum line with the new patented Perio Nozzle® was a major breakthrough in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease.
"Many specialists and some general dentists are already familiar with the EMS Air Flow system which has proven the most reliable precision air prophylaxis equipment in the world. The Air Flow Master takes the capabilities of this process to the next level by removing non-visible plaque and biofilm from well below the gum line."
With the growing awareness of the association of the bacteria from periodontal disease with the elevated risk of heart attack and stroke, Mr Giess said many specialists and general dentists were placing much more emphasis on 'air prophylaxis' in routine patient treatment.
"Overseas studies show around 80 per cent of all men and women suffer from some form of gingival inflammation often not identified and often not treated. The risks on a patient's health from bacterial build-up in the oral cavity are very real - not only minor aliments like halitosis and gingivitis, but up to four times greater risk of heart attack."
Mr Giess said EMS precision Swiss made instruments were favoured by dentists worldwide and EMS was well known as a pioneer of the ultrasonic piezoceramic scaling and Air-flow prophylaxis teeth cleaning principles.
In addition to EMS's technical superiority, Mr Giess said one of the most appealing aspects of the air polishing system was the new range of available powders. The 'Soft' powder offers more gentle application to the removal of supra gingival plaque and the 'Perio' powder delivers effective biofilm removal sub-gingivally. Both of these powders are pure glycine and allow safe non-abrasive treatment on dentine and cementum surfaces.
"The cleaning process is not only extremely effective, but also virtually painless and there is now an even wider range of pleasantly flavoured EMS 'Classic' powders to make the patient experience even more pleasant," Mr Giess said.
"By using the optimum combination of modified sodium bicarbonate inside a precision water envelope, EMS air prophylaxis systems remove plaque and biofilm quickly and painlessly."
