Over 150 people attended the first in a series of lectures on infection control held recently at the Brisbane Hilton.

Presented by Professor Laurie Walsh and Dr Neil Savage of the University of Queensland Dental School, the series will travel across Australia. The one-day course, sponsored by A-dec Australia, focuses on new disease trends and revised protocols with particular attention placed on the impact of newly released key documents from the NH&MRC/CDNA and Standards Australia.

The course is suitable for all members of the dental team and will be of particular benefit to dentists, dental assistants, therapists and hygienists who wish to update their knowledge on infection control.

Participants will learn more about:

• Recent trends in infectious diseases;
• Ensuring you comply with revised protocols for instrument handling according to the Spaulding classification;
• Understanding the sharps injury protocols and post-exposure prophylaxis;
• Biofilm reduction strategies and backflow prevention;
• Simplified microbial assessment of dental unit water;
• Changes in the use of disinfectants and detergents for surface management;
• New features and the correct operation of pre-vacuum autoclaves;
• Autoclave record keeping;
• New protocols for the use of biological indicators for validation;
• Integrating emulators and other chemical indicator systems; and
• Instrument tracking.

All delegates receive a certificate, workbook and the course on CD-ROM, plus morning and afternoon tea and lunch.

The next courses are in Melbourne at the Medina Grand on Saturday, October 16 and in Sydney at The Intercontinental Hotel on Saturday, October 30. The date and venue for Perth is yet to be confirmed.
