In August this year, I was fortunate to be able to attend the 4th Annual World Congress of Microdentistry (WCM) conference held at one of the top international hotels in Vancouver B.C. This organization is dedicated to presenting and promoting the newest techniques and technologies to assist dentists to provide the best level of care possible while pursuing a minimally invasive philosophy.
The scientific program was hectic - starting at 7:30am each morning and finishing by 5:30pm (usually) in the evenings. A variety of current interest topics were presented including cariology, lasers in dentistry, new concepts in visualization for periodontal treatment, conservative preparation design and restoration (and much more). The lectures were extremely informative and the material generally very well presented. The format of workshops on specific topics in the afternoons was well-attended and most enlightening.
The participants, who came from all over the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Europe, are a lively group keen to exchange new ideas as well as have a good time. In the evenings, we were able to relax and share some fun in between the learning. The social highlight of the conference was the awards night at which Perth dentist Dr Ben Ong was among a select group honoured for their contribution to the WCM. The band which rocked on well into the night was mostly made up of dentists and presenters from the congress.
I am already looking forward to next years' meeting which will be held in San Francisco, again in August. I am certain it will be at least as challenging and inspiring as this year's conference.
